All research projects in the physical sciences with the separated-sector cyclotron facility are initiated by submitting a proposal to the Program Advisory Committee (PAC). In order that proposals may be fairly assessed, they should adhere to the standard format and should contain all the information under the headings in the order indicated. If some of the questions do not apply to your experiment, please state so explicitly. Note that all proposals should also be accompanied by an application for the scheduling of (a part of) the beam time allocated to it, if any, during the next operational period (see below).\newline
The iThemba LABS mission statement has identified student training as one of the major functions of iThemba LABS. In view of this every effort is to be made to involve South African post-graduate students in the research project with regard to the prospect of beam time. Since the policies of iThemba LABS also state that beams are provided on a non-chargeable basis it regards the opportunities opened up for student exchange in international collaborations to be of fundamental importance.

\textbf{EVALUATION PROCEDURE FOR NEW RESEARCH PROPOSALS}

The PAC will evaluate the merits and feasibility of all new proposals in order to approve a 12-month experimental program. In exceptional cases the Director may allocate discretionary beam time in response to the demand, which develop suddenly. Generally, less than ten per cent of the available beam time will be allocated for this purpose.

\textbf{APPLICATIONS FOR THE SCHEDULING OF ALLOCATED BEAM TIME }

Beam time allocated by the PAC in conjunction with the approval of a research proposal will remain live for up to one calendar year. After that the proposal must be resubmitted to the PAC. At each PAC meeting all balances outstanding, including any newly approved beam time, are considered for allocation of scheduling priorities for the next operational period. For this purpose, all spokespersons are asked to complete the prescribed beam-time application form. This form provides fields to describe progress made with beam time already received, if any.
